The games I open first, sorted by the kind of hour
“Best free games” lists usually name fifty titles from fifty sites and then stop being useful. This one is the short version I actually use. Each category has a place to start on FreeGameToPlay, and a sentence on where I go when I want a bigger field.
A puzzle
Start with Sudoku Master if you want rules you already know, or Flow Fill if you want to learn the board in one look. 2048 Hexa is the addictive one. The rest of that mood is the puzzle category and the brain games shelf. When I want a wider puzzle site, I open Coolmath Games.
A run
Dino Flip is the dinosaur game on this site: flip gravity, keep going, try to beat the last distance. Blocky Runner and Minecart Rush are the straighter runs. Grapple Rush is the one that rewards timing, a hook over a rising lava line. They are grouped as endless runners. Poki has a much larger runner aisle if one of these is not your shape.
Two people, or a quiet board
For two people in the room: Tic-Tac-Toe, then Trappex. The full local list is 2 player games. For one person who wants a board anyway, Mahjong Solitaire on the board games page.
Something to aim
Bubble Beat and Fruit Archer are the light ones. Mech Fury is the longer fight, a mech in a survival arena. All of them sit in shooting games, and all of them are still fine for kids who like action. CrazyGames is where I look for a shooter this studio did not make.
How to use a list like this
Is this a ranking of every free game on the internet?
No. It is a starting point on FreeGameToPlay, plus the larger sites I trust when the category here is too small. Nobody can honestly rank every browser game.
What if I only have five minutes?
Tic-Tac-Toe, Bubble Beat, or one board of Zen Slide. Save Mech Fury and Sudoku Master for a longer sit. There is a separate note on when a short round is not enough.
